Rabbit Age Calculator

Rabbits mature fast, then settle into a steady pace — a 1-year-old rabbit is already a young adult of about 21 human years.

YoungAdultSenior

Based on the commonly used house-rabbit aging guideline (typical lifespan 8–12 years).

How rabbit years work

A rabbit compresses its whole adolescence into the first year — by their first birthday, rabbits are sexually mature, fully grown and behaviorally adult, roughly equivalent to a 21-year-old human. Year two brings them to about 27, and from there each rabbit year counts for about six human years. A 10-year-old rabbit is a distinguished ~75 in human terms.

Helping your rabbit reach the far end of the chart

The gap between a 5-year and a 12-year rabbit life usually comes down to four things: unlimited grass hay (dental and gut health), spaying or neutering (uterine cancer affects a large share of unspayed females), indoor housing away from predators and temperature extremes, and a vet who actually sees rabbits. Senior rabbits benefit from annual bloodwork and a close eye on eating habits — a rabbit that skips meals for 12 hours is an emergency.

Age conversion is a general guideline; breed size and health history shift the curve. Not a substitute for veterinary advice.

Frequently asked questions

How long do pet rabbits live?

Indoor pet rabbits typically live 8-12 years; some reach 14+. Spaying/neutering, hay-based diet and indoor housing are the biggest longevity factors.

How old is a 3-year-old rabbit in human years?

About 33 human years. Rabbits reach roughly 21 human years in their first year, 27 by year two, then add about 6 human years per rabbit year.

When is a rabbit considered a senior?

Most rabbits are considered senior from 6-8 years old, depending on breed size — larger breeds age faster. Watch for slowing down, weight change and dental issues.
