From calories to cups
Dog foods vary enormously in energy density — dry kibble ranges from about 300 to 450 kcal per cup. Find the kcal/cup value on your bag and divide: a dog needing 780 kcal/day eats about 2.2 cups of a 350 kcal/cup food. Feeding guides on bags tend to overestimate; calories are the more reliable currency.
Signs you've got the amount right
You should be able to feel (not see) your dog's ribs, and see a visible waist from above. Weigh monthly: steady weight in an adult dog means the calorie target is working. Adjust in 10% steps rather than big jumps.

Do treats count toward daily calories?
Yes — and vets recommend treats make up no more than 10% of daily calories. If your dog needs 600 kcal/day, keep treats under 60 kcal.
My dog is overweight. Should I just feed less of the same food?
Calorie restriction should target the dog's ideal weight, not current weight, using a lower factor (around 1.0 × RER of ideal weight). For meaningful weight loss, ask your vet for a plan — crash-dieting dogs is unsafe.
